I like to be dramatic, once in a while, the shots I’m talking about are not gunshots! But flue shots.
The first shot against the ‘common’ flue I had 16 days ago, my PG and his assistant invited all their patients to show up on Saturday October 24 between 9 and 16 o’ clock, some 1,000 [...]

I promissed Sally my therapist at Novarum to read the book Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink Ph.D. during my vacation and write down some quotes from the book. I’m not going to do the last, but I can tell you it certainly opened my eyes to a lot of other things.
Like a lot of things [...]

Finally I’m under my ceiling weight of 170 kg. It has taken some time but the new start just before Christmas worked. Officially I would see this specialist only for 5 weekly meetings but together we’ve decided that we’ll add another 5 weeks to it. After that I’ll change to another group.
The cue-exposure I talked [...]

Yes, even 53 year olds get back to school and not just to pick up the kids. Yesterday was my first day of going back to ’school’ after the holidays. One of the first things I had to do was stepping on the scales to see If I had reached my goal which I had set 3 [...]

Ever since my miss-step at the end of May 2008, I’ve seen my specialists every fortnight, and in the weeks between them my podotherapist. From the end of October till yesterday it was only monthly and the therapist every 14 days, and now I have to check-in every two months. In between I’ve to visit [...]

When I arrived at the hospital unannounced, they were first mad that I didn’t call them in advance, because they had to find my files in the archives. Then they said it could take some time to find them and a long wait before the specialist was available. I said I came prepared with a [...]

After a good night sleep, I turned in early on a Saturday night, I’m feeling much better now. It looks like the lap-band has moved a bit after coughing my heart out last night. This morning I started with a glass of water and a slice of bread, worked a bit on the website of [...]

Later today I have a visit planned at the OLVG at the Radiology department. I haven’t lost any weight since October last year, but haven’t gained any too. I just want to know if the lap-band is still in its place, if it needs a refill of saline water and if it is the source of [...]

Today was a Spanner-day at the AMC hospital, a special day for doctors in training. Each year they have 6 of these meetings and these young doctors have to visit at least 5 of them. Today’s subject was Diabetes Mellitus and its effect on the feet and lower limbs. Three patients of the Neuro Ulcer [...]

no, not in the grave! Both feet are at last in new shoes, shoes which are lighter in weight and give more comfort to my ‘tiny’ feet. One of the strange things that happen is… as you get older you become smaller in height, with me it’s the opposite I’m getting taller. It’s not me [...]

A Giant Step Forwards at last!
After almost 3 months the wound at the side of my foot is slowly healing. I hope the X-rays they took of that same spot this afternoon will also give a positive outcome.
I still have to take another two months antibiotics since the necrosis virus is not totally gone. I’m [...]

The Good,
Okay, here’s an update on last weeks visit to the hospital, the good news is that the X-rays didn’t show a progress in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. My feet are still flat and all the teared muscles under my foot have stopped growing, that was nothing new to me.
the Bad
The wound at the side of my foot [...]

Yes, it’s one of those days again. I re-read my manuals, delved into my conscience and figured out what I should do.
It’s 13 months ago that I had my stomach surgery and almost 8 months since I really lost weight. Lacking the will to make a change has bothered me for some time now, while [...]

The day started yesterday with my transport not showing up, when I called Public Transport for the Handicapped [AOV] they said I was already on my way to hospital while I was still sitting outside waiting for their arrival. When I told them that her reaction was “Oops!, the next car will be at your [...]

I’m starting to think I’m a hospital-junkie, I was at the AMC on Monday to see my diabetes specialist, or better even his substitute, a vascular specialist. He showed me the curve of my HbA1c*, how wonderful it went in October 2001, when I was stuck at home and other people did my shopping [buying only the good [...]

No, it’s not the 1984 dance movie with Kevin Bacon.
It all has to do with me realizing I could loose my foot if I don’t change my attitude towards that ‘little wound’ at the side of it.
One of my best friends wrote to me this weekend, it started as a chit-chat of how his marigolds [...]

The fact that diet is a key part of managing diabetes is no surprise. After all, glucose comes from food, so it makes sense that what you eat plays a role in making your blood sugar go up.
But you shouldn’t think of food as the problem. Instead, consider it a big part of the solution.
Food [...]

Today is the Las Vegas Marathon and half marathon, in my mind I run all the way with Michael Guy of Chicago who trained over the last 6 months using the National AIDS Marathon Training Program. This is a six-month physical conditioning program that will train you to complete a marathon and help raise millions of dollars [...]
