Drive Electric

Dutch motorists have never paid such a large share of their income for petrol, even during the 1970s oil crisis.

In 1973, a litre of petrol cost €0.36, while the average income was €8,000 a year. In the 1990s, some 3.5% of household spending went on petrol but that has now risen to 4%.

Petrol now costs 1.88 euro* a litre or 2.46 USD, which makes it 9.31 USD a gallon!

I’m glad I’ll drive all over town electric, it only needs to be a bit warmer so a long tour is do-able. And otherwise maybe I need a Renault Twizy, which is fully electric, but then I need a garage too.

*70 percent is taxes.

Ours is about US$1.45 per litre and we complain long and hard.

You seem to be able to go everywhere. How many miles can you go on a charge and do they have charging stations or are shop owners just that nice? (maybe it’s because you’re so nice?)

I can travel as far as 30 km / 20 miles on a warm sunny day. On a cold wintery day I’m happy to reach the ferry and turn back before I run out of ‘gas’, just 9 km / 6 miles.

I can bring my uploader but a full battery takes about 6 to 8 hours. Shopkeepers charge you up to 1 euro while a ‘full tank’ is only 5 cents. They’re not nice, they think you’re a nuisance. It’s easier to call the Regional Taxi Service [Stadsmobiel], which pick you up and brings you home.
