Over the coming months I’ll keep you updated on the Best of Amsterdam shops. To start this series I’ll kick off with…
HARTOG‘s Volkoren Bakkerij [whole wheat bakers]. They are the only baker in the Netherlands where they ground the grains on the premises. Their shop is not the largest, but people don’t mind to cycle an extra 15 minutes to get to the store and when they arrive they also don’t mind to wait their turn on the curb to get their daily loaf. Almost all products* are made with whole wheat flour, and without artificial additives. Just flour, water, yeast and no preservatives. *Spelt flour is also milled and baked at Hartog’s.
Last Saturday their Dutch donuts, made of whole wheat flour won the best sandwich of the week award by Het Parool, another Best of Amsterdam winner.
On their site they have a documentary [long version 31 minutes, short version 6 minutes] titled “Het geheim van de rij” [The secret of the row] sorry, only Dutch spoken. So when in Amsterdam, visit Hartog Volkoren Bakkerij or if you need a sandwich, or coffee, or… step in at Boterham. BTW, a sign inside their sandwich shop says you can bring your own sandwiches… up until now no-one has done so.
Hartog Volkoren Bakkerij
Ruyschstraat 56
Boterham [translates to: Sandwich]
Wibautstraat 77 [just around the corner of the bakery]

I’m going to have to print these all and bind them so we have our own “Peter’s Guide to Amsterdam” for our next and long-overdue visit to the city.
Goed Idee, Mitchell!
I visited the nieghbourhood of the HVB with Google Street View and I’m still amazed of how clean the streets are in Amsterdam. (less some graffitis).
Hugs
Jon
Boys,
Every 3 months I’ll put them in a downloadable PDF, name, address, small map and web address. At first I thought it would be hard to find good places, making it a twice weekly affair. In the mean time I’ve enough addresses to make it a weekly thing. I didn’t do it all myself a friend helped. She read on Facebook that I wanted to start this series.
Jon, what you saw on Street View must have been a day after the cleaners just left. I know we have a name but that’s not true, in real life I’m ashamed of what people throw away in the street while an empty bin loves to have soda cans, newspapers or an inside out umbrella.
