Space… the final frontier… this is a story about creating space.
Last year I picked out all the Gay related books out of my bookcases, together with all the books I wanted to sell via Bol.com [Dutch version of Amazon]. The Gay authors and books were packed in 12 big boxes and moved to the basement. The books for sale went in the same direction, but after no-sales for months I removed my link at Bol. The books stayed where they were, occupying space were once a bike stood.
When we started to clean up the place last month, I finally made the call to IHLIA to let them know some 1200+ books were looking for a good home, together with a box of XXX DVD’s and some 360 E-books in PDF. The last ‘stack’ of books was the lightest one, just the weight of a disk.
This morning the conservator ‘special collections’ at the Amsterdam Public Library and a member of staff picked up the boxes. When they saw the smile on my face when they picked up a carrier bag full of DVD’s they asked what was going on. I only had to direct their eyesight to the text on the side of the bag, it said in silver lettering DELICIOUS
How many books!!! In Victoria we have Lesbian adn Gay Archives. I am a member. They conduct some gay history walks during our Midsummer Festival.
The library takes XXX DVDs?!?!
YES they do! This is the Netherlands not some backward country in which religion counts more…
The whole collection can be viewed at the library, they have special study rooms, but you can’t borrow it to view at home. BTW, you have to bring your own Kleenex.
I’m blushing just imagining those “special study rooms”.
Thanks for your feed back last night.
m.
First I had also an odd imagination of what those rooms look like, until I saw one. It’s a glass enclosed office, the bottom and top are 3 feet of clear glass, the middle is 4 feet of milk glass. So stop blushing, the Kleenex is to blow your nose or something…
No wonder the libraries in the Netherlands are so popular!
