It started in the 13th Century as a Monastery church of the Dominican Order in Maastricht. When the French entered the city in 1795 it stopped being a church and had several other functions, one of them a bicycle shed.
Now it is mostly restored and a bookstore and espresso bar opened its doors in this building a year ago. On one side of the building is a free standing bookcase of 3 floors, its uniqueness is that you can see the ceiling paintings from close-up. They found the oldest fresco [1337] in the Low Countries in this former church, it’s restoration can be followed life. I hope to visit this place next year when we organize “the European Master Tailor Congress” in Maastricht.
This bookstore was voted Best Shop Interior in the Netherlands 2007, you can imagine why.
wonderful architecture for a bookstore. It must be a delight to visit.
Wow… what a stunning building… can’t wait to see the building for myself next year!
Hope things are great for you Pete… xx
