Food sites

food3A few years ago a friend of mine started a free magazine about food, it was distributed through supermarkets in Chicago-land. Alas after a few issues he had to stop printing them because the supermarkets did not see the potential a magazine like that had to existing and future customers. Here in the Netherlands every major [and some minor] supermarket chain has its own magazine.

I liked to help him and did some artwork for him, mostly ‘tongue in cheek’ headlines and recipes to go with them. That is when I found some great websites like:

I had to use the Cook’s Thesaurus because we use different words for the same product, what we call a paprika is a bell pepper in the States or a capsicum in New Zealand. What we call a mandarin is known in other countries as a clementine etcetera. Can you imagine how hard it was for me to find the product cilantro?  = coriander leaf = Chinese parsley = culantrillo = koyendoro = Mexican parsley = pak chee = yuen-sai = green coriander = coriander green! Most of all I had to keep in mind I was writing for the American market.

Sorry friends, nothing of what I wrote was published, but if you are interested just leave a comment…
